Project Description: Family Entertaining Garden

As part of the redevelopment of the house a new terrace was required, the house was set high above the garden and required a generous flight of 36 steps to access the lawn. The banks were graded and then planted using layer and mound forming evergreen shrubs to stabilise the bank and provide ground cover. The steps had two landings built into them to facilitate a change of direction to reduce the feeling of insecurity by walking down the steps.

The terrace was designed to incorporate a light sawn sandstone and a blue-grey slate paving, the slate was laid then cut to provide a curving path from the morning room and kitchen that narrowed down the steps, a stone ball water feature was placed by the steps to provide a link with water to the natural pond in the lawn on the lower level.

A low level rendered blockwork wall was designed with an integral planting pocket curved from the steps round to the house providing a safety barrier and windbreak, the wall near the house was intended as a privacy screen and so piers were built to hang a side gate and support a cedar slatted fence.

Robust planting was required to survive the windswept and extremely cold winter conditions, grasses ferns, heucheras and clipped box balls filled the raised planters and planting pockets, whilst herbs and box balls were planted in the more sheltered planting pockets by the sunnier and hence warmer walls of the house.

Turn Your Dream Into A Reality

Gardens are never finished they change with the seasons and plants continue to grow and change. A garden design will provide you with the ultimate concept to work towards, however not all gardens can be afforded in one go, so to complete the final garden may take several years, this will be dependent on your budget and time frame.

It is, however, possible to have a garden designed so that it can be built by the contractor in phases. In this way, a section can be completed and enjoyed, whilst the next phase is completed sometime in the near future.
