Postal Garden Design Process

How the Postal and Email Design Service Works and how you will receive your Garden Design:

Stage One

First, send us an email to say hello and introduce yourself, then let us have a brief description of what you would like to do with your garden and perhaps the style you would like to explore. Let us have your contact details and tell us whereabouts in the world you are. We will reply your email or perhaps give you a call to discuss your exciting new project further.  A Design Brief Form will be emailed to you, this we would like completed to the best of your ability and returned, along with some basic overall measurements and photographs of the site, (noting any slopes) this allows us to determine the amount of design work that will be needed and confirm your design fee. To help us understand the style of garden and features that you like, create a mood board or a collection of images of the styles or features that you like, this can then be emailed over to us for us to take a closer look at.

Once the completed Design Brief and photographs have been returned we will then provide you with a Design Fee Proposal this will include a summary of the Design Brief and an invoice for payment, a contract that will require signing and returning, along with a copy of our terms and conditions. At this stage, we will now require some more detailed photographs of the garden showing manholes, drains doors, fences, the house, trees and shrubs etc. We will also require detailed measurements of the garden, you only need to measure the house, boundaries and things that are to remain, we can let you have a survey guide to help you understand the dimensions that we will require. If your garden is too complicated or too large for you to measure (sloping gardens are always difficult), we can put you in touch with a specialist survey team that can accurately position garden features, measure levels and provide us with a digital survey plan.

Stage Two

Once we are satisfied that we have enough information to proceed we will enter the survey information onto a drawing sheet and begin creating a sketch design, this is usually in the form of a colour 3D model. Once completed we will send you over a set of digital images so that you can make comments or suggest any changes that you require. We will make one set of free alterations any additional revisions will be chargeable.

Stage Three

When you are happy with the sketch design we are able to complete the Master Plan Drawing this is a digital black and white 2D drawing usually at 1:50 on an A1 drawing sheet. We will let you have a digital pdf copy and a printed paper copy. This drawing is fully annotated and details the design in plan view only it includes levels and short form specifications. This drawing along with the digital images can then be passed onto a contractor to prepare you a quotation for the construction of the garden. This drawing can also be used to set out the garden and construct it.

Stage Four

We are now able to provide you with a separate fee proposal for the planting design, once the invoice has been paid and the contract has been signed and returned we will then prepare you a planting plan. This is a digital black and white 2D drawing usually also at 1:50 on an A1 drawing sheet. We will let you have a digital pdf copy and a printed paper copy. This drawing is fully annotated and details the planting design in plan view only with a full planting schedule showing the plants names in Latin, with quantities and their sizes.

We would also be able to prepare the construction detailing if required, these are drawn using various scales and drawing sheet sizes they are also digital black and white 2D drawings. We will let you have a digital pdf copy and printed paper copies as necessary. These drawings are fully annotated and detailed with specifications. We would provide you with a separate fee proposal, once the invoice has been paid and the contract has been signed and returned we would then prepare the construction drawings.

A maintenance schedule can be provided, either as a detailed pamphlet showing general garden maintenance, or a very detailed booklet showing what to do with each plant at what time of year. To prepare these schedules we would once again provide you with a separate fee proposal, once the invoice has been paid and the contract has been signed and returned we would then prepare the required schedules.

Stage Five

During construction, we are able to make site visits to check on the progress of the work, or we are able to comment on photographs if you are too far away to visit. However, any experienced quality landscaper should be able to build our gardens without too much difficulty from the drawings provided.

Once the hard landscaping has been completed we would be able to supply and set out the plants in the garden in accordance with the planting design or just supply them for you to plant yourself. We use established trusted and quality nurseries for our plant's, please note that current guidelines require that nursery stock has either been grown in Britain or has been quarantined for at least 12 months before sale all imported plants have their own passports. We are sure that you will not be disappointed by the quality of any of the plants that we supply.

Master

Plan

Once the sketch design has been agreed, we then prepare the Master Plan this is a fully annotated drawing that has been drawn to scale. The drawing shows the positions of borders, paving and garden features. This drawing also includes existing/new levels and short form specifications. This drawing is used by the contractor to price the garden work and set out the garden ready for construction.

Postal Planting Plans Only

The process to provide a planting plan through the post/email is slightly different from that for a full design service, you would still need to complete a planting design brief, which we will send to you and we would still require photographs and a full survey showing measurements. We would also need to have your thoughts as to the style of planting that you would like and we would need to discuss some outline ideas with you before we can commence the design work.

We would then prepare a Planting Design Fee Proposal for you and once it has been signed off and the invoice paid we would then commence design work. Once the soil has been prepared in accordance with our specifications we can then also supply and set out the plants as designed. We would also be able to provide you with a maintenance schedule to look after the borders.

Planting plans are charged at £6/m2 of planting area (hedges are not included in the planting design fee). The minimum charge for any planting design is £100.00, planting plans are normally quoted for once a master plan has been completed and agreed.

Structural and working drawings including site visits are based on £35.00 per hour, this will be agreed with you in writing in advance, invoicing will be made per visit and per drawing.

Planting

Design

Planting plans are drawn up once the master plan has been completed and agreed, they are based on the position and size of the borders designed and the style of planting required to suit the soil conditions and aspect.

The plants are labelled with the quantities required in the position indicated and entered into a planting schedule which shows the plants name in Latin along with the total number of plants required and their size. This drawing can then used to order the plants and set them out in their correct positions.
